Overdressed? Call It Main Character Energy

I think we’ve all been there when standing in front of the mirror, hyped about the outfit we just put together, only for that little voice to creep in: Is this too much? What if everyone else is wearing jeans and hoodies? Am I going to look like I’m trying too hard?

Somewhere along the way, society made it weird to care about how you present yourself. Dressing up became something to downplay, and suddenly, looking put-together was seen as "extra" or too much. But why? Since when did making an effort become a bad thing?

The truth is, fashion is one of the easiest ways to express yourself. It’s a confidence booster, a way to feel good, and sometimes, even a form of self-care. We all know the feeling of putting on an outfit that just clicks, the one that makes you walk a little taller, feel more like yourself, and radiate confidence. That’s not something to be ashamed of. That’s something to embrace.

I used to hold back because I didn’t want to feel out of place. But the more I leaned into dressing how I wanted—whether it was an oversized fur coat, knee-high boots, or a dramatic statement piece—the more I realized that “overdressed” is just another word for standing out. And honestly? That’s kind of the goal.

At the end of the day, what you wear should be about you—not about blending in or dressing down just to match the energy of the room. So if putting in the effort makes you feel good, own it. Wear the statement heels, the bold accessories, the outfit that makes you feel like that girl/boy lol. Because confidence isn’t about dressing for other people. It’s about dressing for yourself.

And if that makes you the best-dressed person in the room? Even better.

  1. I have definitely been there many times where right before I leave to go somewhere I'm questioning my outfit and whether it's "too much" and overthinking every detail about it. Something that I've learned the past few years growing up and being in college is that everyone is so focused on themselves that no one has the time or energy to worry or criticize what you're doing/wearing/looking like/etc, because they're in their own little bubble! I think that everyone should dress how they want to and feel good in what they're wearing.
